Trip No. TRG No 2

A wonderful wilderness canoe experience suitable for all paddlers and age groups.  The trip starts in Whitehorse with a road trip on the Alaska Highway southeast to the riverside village of Johnsons Crossing, the headwaters of the Teslin River.  This flows out of Teslin Lake, a large body of water (75kmi/120km) that straddles the British Columbia – Yukon border.

Enjoy the wilderness campsites and fish for
dsc00688arctic grayling or northern pike and cook the catch or simply watch the endless water flow on the way to its ultimate destination some 2000 miles downstream.

We travel  the Teslin River for its entire length  (115mi/184km) to where it spills into the Yukon River at Hootalinqua an abandoned gold rush village prominent in the days of the paddlewheel sternwheelers that travelled between Whitehorse and Dawson City.  It is hard to imagine that these large vessels navigated the river as late as the 1950s.  A turn-of-the-century shipyard is located just downstream of the village, complete with the derelict sternwheeler “SS Evelyn” on the way. The Yukon River upstream of Hootalinqua was a troubling stretch of water for these large riverboats, and damages requiring repairs were common.

We’re a hundred miles from anywhere” is a frequent and all too true remark from many a river traveller sitting on the shoreline at Hootalinqua. The surrounding cliffs, and the wilderness phenomena of two different and major waterways coming together before your very eyes bring home the place’s isolation. The waters run side by side for some distance to become one large stream on its way to the Bering Sea.

From Hootalinqua, it is another 65mi/104km to Little Salmon Village, an abandoned settlement at the confluence of the Yukon and Little Salmon Rivers and our take-out point.  The river grows in width, and there is time for some aimless drifting and just letting yourself feel in tune with the endless flow of water and the tug of the current on your canoe, the wildlife, and the simple silence that surrounds you.

65At Little Salmon Village we are met by our van and trailer, and our mode of transport changes. Via the Campbell and the Klondike Highways, it is about 255mi/400km back to Whitehorse.
