Teslin River Guided Trip – 8 days

75TESLIN RIVER – Johnsons Crossing to Hootalinqua by floatplane, power boat  and canoe 8 days – fully guided (8-day itinerary includes the arrival and departure days)

Trip No. TRG No 1

This adventure trip starts with a road transfer of canoes and gear to the small riverside community of Johnsons Crossing about 85mi/136km southeast of Whitehorse. The Teslin River flows out of Teslin Lake, a large 75mi/120km long body of water that straddles the British Columbia – Yukon border. This trip takes in the entire length of the Teslin river to its confluence with the Yukon River 115mi/184km downstream. 61The Teslin was a secondary route to the Klondike gold fields at the turn of the last century. In the early 1900s, Whitehorse merchants came down the Yukon River and at Hootalinqua turned upstream to reach the Village of Teslin, a well-established community even before the gold rush. Gold miners, trappers, homesteaders and their families lived along the river until the Alaska Highway was built during WWII. This gave the folks from Teslin a road connection to Whitehorse and resulted in river residents moving away to the larger Yukon communities.  Commercial river transport was no longer available. Since then the Teslin river valley has reverted to its wilderness state and it now provides paddlers with a true back country paddling experience. 57Clear water, awesome campsites, great fishing and easy paddling make this one of our premier guided trips. On day 7 we are picked up by powerboat/s at Hootalinqua for an unforgettable upstream ride through the famous Thirty-Mile of the Yukon River to the north end of equally renowned  Lake Laberge and the abandoned Village of Lower Laberge, a once thriving community in the days of the Klondike Gold Rush.  We have time for a bit of exploring before being picked up by floatplane for the ride back to Whitehorse.  This part of the trip is in itself an unforgettable experience as you will get a birds’ eye view of the lake and follow the river back to Whitehorse.  This evening dinner with the guides and group bring the trip to a close – our treat.
